I was looking some photos last evening and one was taken when I just started my Saturday job - think I was about 14 or 15 years old. I had always been a baby sitter for a neighbours children and then another family who lived near my sister. It got me thinking about my first job where I got an actual pay cheque lol! The Saturday job was at a local hairdressers and I did jobs like make drinks for customers, washed and combed their hair, swept floors, put the towels into wash and dry, clean the sinks and do any little job that was needed.
My First job where I was paid with an actual cheque was a the local Library, I worked 4 hours on a Saturday and then school holidays. I loved that job! I got to file away the returned books, categorize new books with their dewey decimal codes, look for books that people were ordering and then check the LP's for scratches - our library lent out records for a short time. I really loved the whole experience as the library was in a very large Victorian building which also housed many works or art by local artists, very old manuscripts and lots of historical artifacts. After lunch on a day when I worked the full day I was allowed to go to the restoration room and watch the old books being rebound or cleaned. The smell of paper was so beautiful and I still love to touch the pages of books; nothing to beat holding a book and turning the pages.
What was your first 'proper' job??
