Today is Remembrance Day and I am so grateful for all of our veterans and family members who have served to keep our country entries safe. My grandfathers both served during WW2 and earlier wars. My paternal grandfather has been injured in WW1 and during WW2 was an ARP warden based at home, these officers were either too infirm or old to serve but had jobs on the home front to keep localities safe and to deal with the aftermath of local bombings by the Germain airforce. My maternal grandfather was a member of the Military Police red caps and accompanied the 7th Armoured Division in Italy and went to war when my Mum was a baby, returning on her 7th birthday. I cannot imagine a time when husbands were gone for so long ... no wonder our women were so strong and worked as a village to raise children, to keep the country going and supported each other.
You may notice a small but very special poppy in my photograph which I added as nod to remembrance day; it was made by the Royal British Legion to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Paschendaele in 2017. It is made from British brass artillery shell fuses found on the battlefields sites, and contains earth recovered from the fields and mixed with red and green enamel. It was designed to be an individual tribute to each of the brave 60,083 soldiers who lost their lives in the battle. I wear it with pride and grateful thanks to every single one of those soldiers and for every single veteran and serving member of our armed forces.
My Dad is not old enough to have served during WW2 but did complete his National service after the war as did many young men. He spent a lot of his time in Jamaica and has many stories of his time there. Todays card was made for my Dad and I will be mailing it tomorrow for him.
